Karyn White was a huge part of my childhood and was a huge part of what is now known as the New Jack Swing era. During the late 80s and early 90s Ms. White was all over the music charts. So we ponder...Upon her debut she scored big pop & r&b hits w/ Superwoman, The Way You Love Me, and who could forget this one:
With her second release came the #1 hit Romantic and my personal fave The Way I Feel About You:
A third album came and went in 1994 entitled Make Him Do Right. A few years ago I remember some DJ did a new dance version of Superwoman w/ Karyn's vocals. But what's she up to now?
Aside from raising her family it seems she's working on a new album! I couldn't find more info but according to her wikipedia entry:
White left Warner Bros. Records in 1995 and dropped out of the music public eye for many years. She currently resides in Santa Barbara, California and will record her first album in well over 12 years. The album, Action Fighter is slated for release in the fourth quarter of 2006.
Not sure if I'm loving the title, but I'm so loving a new album. While searching I came across this recent picture:

Well, technically the last we heard of Karyn White was in 1995. She compiled (along with Terry Lewis) a special Greatest Hit's album, "Sweet N Sensual", just for Japan that featured some rare non-US tracks (although it was missing the fabulous "Walking The Dog"). I have it and she even wrote liner notes for it dedicating the album to her "dearest friends in Japan". I have no idea why this Greatest Hits album was never released anywhere else. I don't even think the US has gotten a cheapie "Millenium Collection" from Karyn.
ReplyDeleteSupposedly that remix of "Superwoman" you mentioned featured brand new vocals by Karyn. I don't know Sista M if you have heard the dance version, but the vocals do not sound like the original ballad ones. It was a fierce remix that was very popular in club in 2002 and will always remind me of my first year in Chicago.

I have that remix, in fact I think you gave it to me! Ha! She needs to come back already. As far as I am concerned, the talk of the new album is just an internet rumor thus far. Until I see a new official site and/or release date, she'll remain a Missing Pop Star.

Karyn, what a cool lady! It's interesting to note that she started as a touring background vocalist with the oh-so-fine O'Bryan in the early 80's (in fact, you can see her in the video for "Breakin' Together"!). Also, one of my favorites of hers was a song from 1986 that she recorded with Jeff Lorber entitled "Facts of Love," which was her first charting hit (the video was on BET a lot and it made the top 20 of Billboard's R&B chart).
ReplyDeleteShe's actually made a couple of appearances on record since "Make Him Do Right," specifically on two CD's by smooth-jazz artist Eddie M in 1998 and 2001! I had heard about the "Superwoman" remake, I wasn't sure if she had redone the vocals either. Sounds cool! I remember when "Make Him Do Right" came out being particularly surprised by how low-budget the project seemed compared to her previous ones, especially considering how successful she had been! And given that Warner Bros. was one of the last few majors that had a reputation for commitment to its artists! The three videos from the album all seemed very cheaply (and badly) done, especially "I'd Rather Be Alone" -- which was actually quite a nice song! Good concept for the video, but poorly carried out.
One particularly awesome video was "Walkin' the Dog," she was so sassy in that one!

I luv Karyn White. She had such an amazing soulful voice that made all of the songs she sang on sound so amazing. I love the songs from her debut album and "Ritual of Love."
